Movie Review: Ghostbusters

“I ain't afraid of no ghost!”

I promised that the next movie I watch is going to be my review material for Kemz Movies, so here we go.

Ghostbusters is an amazing iconic oldie, directed by Ivan Reitman, starring the Academy and Emmy awards winner Bill Murray (who’s awesome), Dan Aykroyd who was nominated for an Academy award in 1990 for his role in Driving Miss Daisy, Harold Ramis who passed away earlier this year (may his soul rest in peace), and Ernie Hudson.

Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Raymond Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) and Egon Spengler are parapsychologists, who are doing research on the supernaturals in Columbia University, and of course they lose their job! They move on next to start their own supernatural investigation service called the Ghostbusters. They use the most advanced, up to date high-tech equipment to measure ghost existence.

I had vague scattered memories of the movie, so I had to re-watch to know if it’s really good or is it just because I watched it when I was a kid. I loved the movie. It’s funny, interesting, there was never a dull moment, the cast is amazing. Acting style is a bit outdated, but hey, I love 80s movies and shows, so to me that was perfect. The special effects and “CGI” was very laughable because, come on, you can see the stop motion an green screen halo around those monsters and ghosts, but it didn’t bother me at all.

Ghostbusters fans are very familiar with the famous theme song “Ghostbusters” it’s a fun song that was written and performed by Ray Parker, Jr., where were got the two catchphrases "Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!" and "I ain't afraid of no ghost."

Overall Ghostbusters is a fun light watch if you like oldies, maybe it will bother you if you are too prĂ©cises about the visuals, just because of the outdates special effect. I would definitely watch it again, and I’m super excited for Ghostbusters 3, which was announced to be shot in early 2015.

Movie Review: How To Train Your Dragon 2

Ok, so from my review on the first part (click here) you would know that I loved this movie dearly! Now in this sequel, 5 years later the village of Berk continues to live in harmony with Dragons! The peaceful living is disturb when Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) with Toothless stumble into a new lands with new dragons. The land is controlled by a Dragon Master, Drago (Djimon Hounsou), who ruthlessly treats dragons as his weapons of destruction!  Other than that Hiccup is surprised to meet the one he always thought was dead, his mother (Cate Blanchett, who I adore!!).

I will say no more about the story, because this is just a drop in the plot! But I will say this, I love love love this movie!!! I was so into it, super excited and caught into that amazing world of Vikings and Dragons that I didn’t even take notes for this review. This part still kept all what is good in the first one, still funny, adventurous, witty and plain cute! Then it added a whole bundle of great new elements to it!

I was blown away by the flying maneuvers and technics used. Being 5 years together Hiccup and Toothless needed to show how much they bounded and the animators did a marvelous job! They added new stuff and moves. I was breath taken! You can tell their attention to detail and research on flying and of course the money spent on it hahaha.

I even cried! “You have the heart of a Chief and the soul of a Dragon”

There’s no more to say, Go WATCH IT! And please do watch the first one too, if you haven’t yet. It’s better to get into the world from the start <3

Such an AMAZING and thrilling dragon ride!!

Btw, I just realized that the movies are based on books written by Cressida Cowell. To check them in Amazon, click here. For more info and to watch the trailer, click here.

Now if you excuse me, I need to pack and go to Berk!! Bye!

MOVIE REVIEW: GRAND PIANO

The story centers on a very talented pianist, named Tom Selznick (Elijah Wood), who stopped performing in public for a long time because of his stage fright. Five years later, Tom reappears to perform again to his audience in Chicago. During his performance on stage in a packed theater, Tom finds a threatening message on his score that says: “Play one wrong note and you die”.

When I saw the trailer, I thought to myself: “this is definitely a good movie to watch and I’m pretty sure it is one of those artistic movies that I would probably like to own”. I said that because I saw a very interesting combination that would make any movie “A successful movie”.  It was a mixture of art, music, topped with a high-end cinematic look.

Unfortunately, the elements that I just mentioned weren’t utilized very well, AND they weren’t used for a well-developed story. I felt as if the writer had randomly thrown the plot into the script only for the sake of adding tension and suspense without any logical reason behind it. The movie did not explain to us what the sniper’s motivation was, and why he threatened to kill the pianist after all.

When I finished watching the movie I felt really confused. I kept thinking to myself that maybe the story was fine but I didn’t understand it? Maybe the movie contained a hidden message in the music pieces that were played? Maybe if I studied classical music I would understand it? So what I did next was I searched the name of the music piece that the sniper asked Tom to play, La Cinquette, thinking that I would find any information about it or any background that would help me to understand the story. Despite all my effort to try to like it, the film continued to disappoint me. I found out that this piece is one of the movie’s original music, which means there is no history and no hidden meaning embedded into it.

This was my first review on this blog, and hopefully not the last one. I will review more artistic movies in the future and I will definitely recommend the best for you to watch.

Movie Review: Guzaarish

Guzaarish is another movie that takes me time to think on how I can review it in a way that would deliver its real beauty. This movie is all about beauty, if I tell you it is Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai then you know what I mean!

The story is of the great magician Ethan Mascarenhas (Roshan), who requests to be dignified by getting euthanasia (the mercy killing) with the help of his best friend, the lawyer Devyani Dutta (Shernaz Patel), after being a quadriplegic for 14 year. When the court denies his case, Ethan proposes his appeal for people to vote through his radio show, Radio Zindaghi, which is run from his home, and directed by his nurse Sofia D'Souza (Aishwarya). Being a model for millions of people, Ethan is faced with harsh responses, but he, who has been a conquer of millions lives, is in despair with his own. Out of nowhere, a young man called Omar Siddiqui (Aditya Roy Kapoor) appears, and fights to learn magic from Ethan, and reveals to us the shocking tragedy of Ethans quadriplegia. Sofia who has nursed Ethan for 12 years, and whose life is defined by the daily rituals of serving her master, stands against his request, but eventually tries to satisfy his desire, in a different way.

Guzaarish (request) is a great drama romance movie, and, literally, a work of art. We are constantly shifted in and out between Ethans glory days, and despair current ones. Ethans magic tricks and performances are spectacular; you would be mesmerized as you watch the gracefulness and beauty. Sofia is like a piece of art along with the chapel-like mansion; an art of old ages. Her gypsy style, her beautiful earrings, and the only dance she did in the movie is so charming. The mansion, each and every detail on the walls, and the furniture and the garden, and the great landscapes of Goa, are all jewel-like portraits. The cinematography (Sudeep Chatterjee) is literally captivating; you would be indulged and enchanted as you watch.

The idea of mercy killing is denied by all means to everyone, but if we consider it from Ethans perspective, what is such stage a person might reach to appeal for and face death so eagerly!  Looking at Ethan being a model for so many people, who wants him alive for them, but what about him, what about his own life; a life where he cant fulfill or satisfy his basic needs or desires, nor even scratch his nose! In such a case, could he be granted euthanasia, what is left for him from life?

When I first watched this movie, I directly grabbed my notebook and started jotting down quotes. Ethans radio show is so inspiring, the way he presents it, his sense of humor, and his presence in the moment this is the kind of truthful absolutely beautiful movie which calls out to enjoy life, live every moment, laugh loudly, forgive quickly and love deeply.

Guzaarish is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Black movie) and has won 3 awards in India.

You won't regret any tear you shed!
