Movie Review: Interstellar

In a time where the overabundance of science-fiction is starting to exhaust the genre of any original ideas, Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar is a phoenix that rises from the ashes of tasteless video-game-like, half-cooked ideas, and it succeeds in bringing the genre back to its glory. With many references to 2001: A Space Odyssey, Interstellar is as close as it gets to creating a space epic that can transcend time since Kubrick’s masterpiece.

You all should go see Interstellar for many reasons. The First of which is that it’s very reminiscent of classic science fiction; it’s a graceful space journey that steers away from unnecessary hand-held action sequences, only to replace them with skillfully executed space ballads. The visuals are a beautiful marriage of computer generated imagery and practical effects, but what really brings them to life is a score that is as majestic as space itself. One could argue that the Hans Zimmer organ score almost becomes a character that is aware of itself, and due to its overpowering presence, it’s hard to ignore the juxtaposition of classical organ hums, and the tranquility of outer space, which gives the film its almost divine, yet eerie aesthetic.

Secondly, Interstellar puts you on an emotional roller coaster through an extremely human story. It’s hard to discuss the plot in details without giving away too much, but I’ll try as much as I can to keep this a spoiler-free zone. In a nutshell, the four-act narrative revolves around the dynamics of a father-daughter relationship in a struggle against time itself. The father embarks on a journey to outer space, promising his daughter to come back one day. Within these complex boundaries, Matthew McConaughey delivers the performance of a lifetime! Believe me when I say that the scenes of him and his daughter are goose-pumps inducing. The plot swings back and forth between moments of sorrow, and moments of excitement. Along with the performances, this pendulum succeeds in keeping you on the edge of your seat during the entire 3-hour runtime of the film.

Another reason to go see this film is the sheer brilliance of the Nolans. Their treatment to the narrative is similar to that of their previous work, in which a series of complicated events leads to an intervention from a dues-ex machina to suddenly elevate a character to catharsis. However, this time, it’s bigger than ever, and it certainly is more complicated than ever.  The narrative is composed from many counterintuitive plot points that are hard to digest, yet all of them are supported by real science. This film is the most engaging physics class you’ll ever attend. It takes you from Einstein’s Special Relativity to Hawking’s theories on wormholes in a matter of minutes. The plot tries to simplify and explain complicated concepts in very basic terms, which leads to the dialogue falling flat at times, and even cheesy at a few instances. However, with the complexity of the treatment, you’re never disengaged; the narrative is layered with messages and meaning. The deeper you examine the film, the more you can extract from it. So if you want to get the most out of this cinematic experience, be prepared to observe, listen, and take notes. It is the kind of film that you will end up watching more than once for the sake of deciphering its enigmatic nature.

To conclude, it’s fair to say that Interstellar is with no doubt the most ambitious science fiction project of our time. No other director has attempted to achieve this kind of grandeur since 2001: A Space Odyssey. I’m not saying that it is as good, but it’s pretty darn close. In fact, it is the closest anyone has ever come to achieving this kind of artistry within the commercial sci-fi genre. It is not a perfect film, though; it has some minor flaws in the dialogue, but heck, nothing’s purely perfect. It is definitely the film of the year, and I expect for it to win Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Achievement in Visual Effects, and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. It is definitely worth the viewing, and I highly recommend seeing it in IMAX.

Movie Review: The Last Samurai

Are you a fan of Japanese culture? More specifically the Samurai?
If you are then, not watching this movie will definitely kick you out of the Japanese lover list!!  Also, if you are not that type then, your mind will just be taken away by it's imaginative and has an amazing plot and magical landscapes.
It is a movie that will appeal to many tastes since it represent a lot of genres: history, drama and action. It’s amazing, emotional and relaxing. It is a movie that gives people a huge amount of Life lessons.

The story was written by the hands of the famous, successful writer John Logan, who is known by his previous 14 years old movie Gladiator, which won 5 Oscars.

Tom Cruise played the role of the American military captain, Nathan Algren. The Japanese culture plus the actor of, War of the Worlds is something imaginative, believe me.

Nathan’s life was a mess; all he felt was guilt and regret from what he had done in his past; the killing of innocent people. Whenever he experiences flashbacks of scenes of war and the killing of children, adults and the elderly, he gets depressed of what happened and his only option to ignore his past mistakes was to get drunk.

Later on, the Japanese government wanted to hire a professional military leader to train and lead the Japanese soldiers, in order to assassinate the samurai katsumoto (Ken Watanabe), along with his companions, who you will fall in love with just like me! Just kidding.
Anyways, he soon will fall in the hands of the samurai's. At first, he wonders about these people. How are they living together and what kept them fighting together for the past thousands of years?

He then realizes and understands the environment, and understands the way of the samurai and how to find the true pleasure of life that we all seek but few live.
Yup, he really did made me understand and surely he will do the same for you.

Carrying on the story will only ruin the movie and its entertainment, but I can't tell you how I respect this movie, it is somehow realistic and at the same time imaginary!! Believe me, I have watched it over 5 times and I still do, because looking at their perspective of life, like Nathan does in the movie, his past changed. He became a whole different person with less anxiety, more aware of his surrounding and has something to protect and has something to live for. They gave him the concepts of life.

Also, watching how their empire lasted for thousands of years is in itself an honor. They have been protecting it from the past and until now. All of these traditions still being held, the remaining traditions of the samurai history.
One of the best things I love about the samurai is there sword "katana." it is mostly one of the strongest in history because of its sharpness and the holder himself. I truly would love to have one!!

Of course, not to mention the world’s Music Legend Hans Zimmer had his hands on the film. He is a man whom spell of soundtrack enchant millions of people. Especially in this movie, one of the special soundtracks in the movie is "Small Measure of Peace”, an absolute masterpiece of art. The name of it is something important in the movie, which Nathan Algren is seeking for.

Just to mention, it is the best most amazing imaginary soundtrack to me. It is relaxing, which feeds your soul by its taste. Every time I hear it, it reminds me of all that’s good in the nature, specially the cherry tree "Sakura." it is a beautiful kind of trees, with pink leaves filling it. The tree shall give you the peace you are looking for.

What I regret the most is not watching this film in the cinema. I wasn't that movie addict kind of person before, and to be honest I didn't like Japan. I actually thought of it as a normal country with some weird culture. But once I watched this specific movie, it really changed the way I thought of it, and the impact it left on me was weird at the same time awesome.
So don't waste your time. Order it from amazon, and I prefer it to be in Blue Ray so it can astonish it's full potential awesomeness to you.

Movie Review: Man of Steel

I had my doubts about this film, because I was never a fan of Superman and never bothered to see any of his films, but when you hear that the producer of this version is Christopher Nolan (director of the last three Batman movies) you gotta see it. And I saw it and I LOVED IT!!!

Finally someone put some series magic into this character! Normally it looks so fake and comicy in a very bad way, but this time there was a soul and depth into the story. I know this will sound stupid, but you actually believe it happening!

From the beautiful and very exciting opening in Krypton you can tell there is something different about this version! This time we have almost 15 minutes of scenes in Krypton! I loved it! We know the planet died, but thank you for showing us more of it! I mean that gave depth to the story! The setting was mesmerizing and the destruction of the planet was amazingly amazing!! I loved how the special effects in this film felt effortless. And there was this velvet texture feel to the way it was filmed, so artistic!

Also I loved the cast choice in this film! Russell Crowe (Superman’s real father) who gave a certain nobility to the film and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner (Superman adopted parents) who touches the deepest emotions in your heart, amongst many other great talents!! And OMG, Amy Adams is by far my favorite Lois Lane. She is phenomenon, refreshing and really gave Lois the journalist edge she normally requires. I love her! We can’t also ignore Henry Cavill and his performance as Clark Kent!! He was just perfection in everyway (yes, I wanna marry him!)!!! He was mysterious and he really delivered the sense of his lost soul trying to find home. You will understand my jabbering once you see this film.

The whole film was like a glimpse of Clark’s journey in finding his identity and true calling. But fear not when I say these remarks, there is mind blowing FIGHT SCENES!! With Superman defying his own people and the fist fight in the sky will get you sitting on the edge of your seat!!!

This film has all the right elements of success. Even as I’m writing this review, I’m listening one of the enchanting soundtracks of Hans Zimmer and it’s just got me in the right mood to write!!

I loved all the plot twists and surprises and this movie actually made me fall for Superman once more!! Don’t miss it!!

Till the next fun film!

Movie Review: Sherlock Holmes

This is a “make me happy” kind of a movie!! Whenever I get gloomy nothing like a dose of Robert Downey Jr. in his role of Sherlock Holmes can make me feel better!!! I love how Guy Ritchie (Director) reinvented the whole concept of this genius detective. I mean we always saw Sherlock as this poised wise man, who walks with confidant, but in this movie he is a badass obsessive crazy genius who blows our minds!!! And also Dr. Watson, played by the hot Jude Law, the character we’re used to see as this fat shorty guy has turned to this attractive former warrior! This is by far my favorite version of this timeless legend.
There are two movies so far of my favorite version and this week the second part of this movie was released and to prepare myself I, yesterday, watched the first one which was released back in 2009 and I felt like I was watching it for the first time!! So exciting!!! First I can’t express on the brilliance of the sound track. I mean talk about original!!! I loved it; it gets you in the mood and also gives the movie its own soul.
The movie is full with action, wittiness and OMG scenes!!! The slow motioned scenes are so intense and dazzling! I mean the artistic value of it is just wowz! I’ve seen the movie more than once and it still grab my utmost attention. The cinematography, the sitting, the wardrobe and the characters, everything was perfect!!! Sensational and as brilliant as Sherlock Holmes!!!
Moving on to part two; I was so afraid and worried it won’t be as awesome as the first one! I love it when a movie proves me wrong!!! It was so so so AWESOME!!! It has all the brilliant elements of the first movie and added more action, more characters and more awesomeness to the plot!!! They moved to Paris and Switzerland, where the most amazing scenery of the whole movie was!!!
I love the way the whole story was recreated and reintroduced to us in this most innovative way! I mean having a mind like Sherlock must’ve had an effect on his character. The way he looks at the details and the way he talks, I think this movie completely nailed it!! I also love the relationship between Holmes and Watson!! They’re like brothers!!
This will always be on my favorite list. It’s such a GENIUS MOVIE!!
I love this movie and its sequel!! I can’t say more!! Just amazing! It will make you laugh, cry, jump with excitement and the itch you want to go and solve a case hahaha!!
I’m writing this review as I listen to the sound track! Hans Zimmer is brilliant!!
I wanna go see it again!!!! If you haven’t yet … GO and ENJOY!!!
