Movie Review: Boyhood

It’s the Awards Season, which means pretty red carpet dresses and filmmakers accepting trophies and saying the speeches they practice all their lives. For that, I wanted to review an Oscar Nominee, and this one actually won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture.

Boyhood, directed and written by Richard Linklater, follows the story of Mason (Ellar Coltrane) and his family since he was 5 years old till he graduated from Highschool. The movie if you believe it was filmed through 12 years with the same cast, so we literary saw Mason and his sister, Samantha (Lorelei Linklater) grow old in the almost three hours movie.

When I heard about this movie, the first thing I imagined was, different cinematography and different definition because cameras and editing techniques have evolved in the last 12 years, but the movie kept it consistent. You won’t feel the difference at all. I mean it makes sense for them to think of that.

The movie is long, but it’s so sweet and you can’t help but get attached to the characters and you want them to be happy and go to school and clap when they graduate. It really is a journey and it feels special to see them grow up and how the setting and cloths were true to the year they were in that specific time. I mean it was as real as it gets. I really enjoyed that.

Also I enjoyed watching how the characters developed through the years, because they won’t be the same, and to see what contributed to each new development. It was a good plot build up and again, still consistent. The cast was pretty good too and I’m happy they all stayed with the project or else it’d be a complete fail. You’d expect the grown ups (Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke) to be good and continue with their character, but I was happy to see that even Ellar kept it straight with his character Mason and you believe it’s the same boy from the beginning till the end. Good casting choice!

The movie had already won 3 Golden Globes and it’s on its way to the Oscars and after watching it, I can say it’s a good chill movie, where you live someone else’s life for a while as you relax on your couch. It’s one of these movies that are casual and quite, yet something special about them that makes you watch till the end.

Movie Review: The Purge

Ok, I’m not a horror fan and this is something I keep on saying in the blog, so when The Purge was released in cinemas I said, nope, not gonna watch it. Then one day I was suppose to go write in my room when I passed by the TV and the Purge was just starting. I was like, hmm, it’s still the afternoon, you can watch this. Because I am interested in the story, but I was too scared. So, I watched it and it’s not scary and its actually entertaining and fun thrilling.

The story is that one day a year for 12 hours, all emergency services shut down (police, hospitals, etc.) and you can either hide in your home all secured or go and kill whoever you want to release the anger in you. One night that allows you to do anything you want and become as dangerous as you want to be. So, the idea is people will release all their anger and bad habits that night and live by the laws peacefully throughout the rest of the year. So in this movie we follow one household who thought it was going to be a quite secure night when things just went super crazy.

The movie was fun and I liked the idea of it. The psychological aspect of releasing all that evil you’ve been piling up all year. There is no artistic point of it and it’s not a great one of a kind horror movie. No, it’s just pure entertainment!

Ethan Hawke was pretty good in it. I really enjoyed his performance. And the rest of the cast was good as well.  I’m starting to really enjoy Lena Headey who plays Cersei in Game of Thrones.  She’s pretty awesome.

There’s not a lot of things to say about this movie, but it’s good. It’s perfect for friends’ movie night. It’s exciting. It’s not long. Just good entertainment.

Sadly I saw this movie after the second movie, The Purge Anarchy was already released and removed from the cinemas so I missed it, but I’m watching it soon. It has better rating than the first one, so let’s see!

Movie Review: Daybreakers

So, I’m into a dark fantasy kind of mood, so I saw my fantasy DVD’s shelf and thought, hmm Daybreakers. Vampires suit my mood and I watched it before and liked it, so let’s watch it again to review it for the blog!

The story of how the world is ruled by Vampires, but with one big problem; humans are becoming extinct and the shortage of human blood is a worldwide crisis. Scientist Vampy Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke) is trying to develop a blood substitute when he encounters humans who need his help to develop a cure.

The first thing that caught my eyes in the movie was the nightlife. How people adjusted the cities and cars to suits vampires. It’s very interesting and not overly done. Like it’s only in 2019 and technology is still the same, just everything is a bit developed and works mostly at night.

The movie is thrilling. You have some creepy scenes, but it’s not action based. The story of the Vampires’ struggle and the hunt for cure are the focus.  The visuals were really good.

It’s dark and yet light in a good way. It’s a fun movie to watch, especially for Vampires fan. I really liked it. Though for me, I don’t want Vampires to rule the world, then there’s not fun underworld and you won’t feel too special when you become one!

Funny thing was, one of the scenes when the vampires are devouring a guy, one of the extras was just shaking his face from far as if he was eating the dude, but you can so tell there was a bit of a gap between his face and the dude’s arm hahaha! I think I only noticed this cause I watched it for the second time.

You know what, now I’m thinking I wanna watch Blade!
