Movie Review: The Great Gatsby

Ah, Gatsby, we meet again!
Reader I’ve never been a fan of the book even though with among my writing friends that’s a shocker, but I never liked it. Even though it talks about the empty side of the 20s, the sadness behind all the glam, glitz and jazz! Still it didn’t do it for me. I did mention earlier that I won’t see the movie, but I was tempted only for one thing: The Fashion!

So I saw the newest movie and even though I think I’m probably the last person on the world to see it, the story goes like this:
Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) moves to New York in the summer of 1922 right next to the illusive and mysterious Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). The billionaire who holds big fabulous parties and invite Nick to his world, because Nick is the cousin of the beautiful Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan) who Gatsby is deeply in love with and try to seduce away from her husband.

At the beginning I was really hooked. The 20s is my favorite era and the fashion is so breath taking! And this movie did it well because it one the Academy Award for Best Achievement in Costume Design. The dresses were timeless! And the Tiffany jewels made the biggest buzz when the movie came out. It also won Best Achievement in Production Design. The setting was magnificent! And the cinematography was a melody.

I loved the soundtrack especially because it was a mix of the crazy Charleston song with current beats. I think the highlight of the whole movie is the first party that Nick went too.

However the more I watched the more I got BORED!! I was checking the time left every 10 minutes. The movie got flat. It was way too long! 2 hours and 15 minutes was too much for that story. Even though the beginning made me think I should read the book and give it another chance, but by the end of the movie I remembered why I hated the book! It made me sad L

To talk about the cast, it was funny because the other day I was wondering what happened to Tobey Maguire. I didn’t see him in any new movies then bam he was right there in the middle of the movie. He was pretty good as well. Leonardo DiCaprio as well played his part well. His reaction when he saw Daisy again was so cute! I love Leo, he always was a brilliant actor. He needs an Oscar, soon!

So this is an ok film, but you need to be in a very good mood or probably sick in bed and have nothing better to do to tolerate the length of the movie.
