Movie Review: The Purge

Ok, I’m not a horror fan and this is something I keep on saying in the blog, so when The Purge was released in cinemas I said, nope, not gonna watch it. Then one day I was suppose to go write in my room when I passed by the TV and the Purge was just starting. I was like, hmm, it’s still the afternoon, you can watch this. Because I am interested in the story, but I was too scared. So, I watched it and it’s not scary and its actually entertaining and fun thrilling.

The story is that one day a year for 12 hours, all emergency services shut down (police, hospitals, etc.) and you can either hide in your home all secured or go and kill whoever you want to release the anger in you. One night that allows you to do anything you want and become as dangerous as you want to be. So, the idea is people will release all their anger and bad habits that night and live by the laws peacefully throughout the rest of the year. So in this movie we follow one household who thought it was going to be a quite secure night when things just went super crazy.

The movie was fun and I liked the idea of it. The psychological aspect of releasing all that evil you’ve been piling up all year. There is no artistic point of it and it’s not a great one of a kind horror movie. No, it’s just pure entertainment!

Ethan Hawke was pretty good in it. I really enjoyed his performance. And the rest of the cast was good as well.  I’m starting to really enjoy Lena Headey who plays Cersei in Game of Thrones.  She’s pretty awesome.

There’s not a lot of things to say about this movie, but it’s good. It’s perfect for friends’ movie night. It’s exciting. It’s not long. Just good entertainment.

Sadly I saw this movie after the second movie, The Purge Anarchy was already released and removed from the cinemas so I missed it, but I’m watching it soon. It has better rating than the first one, so let’s see!

Movie Review: War of the Worlds

Today's review is my second review in Kemz Movies. I will try my best to nail it this time, because I wanted to review a month ago the movie "Forrest Gump" however, I was really surprised of how hard and complex it is to write about this kind of movies.

First let me introduce a movie of one of my favorite actor, Tom Cruise, and my past crush Dakota Fanning: War of the Worlds.

From the name it just gave me goose bumps. My expectations got as high as possible from the beginning of the movie. It attracts the watcher to keep moving on and forgets about time. Even though it’s 2 hours long, you wouldn't notice it, because of all the entertainment and action it delivers. I have watched it several times and each time was different. Every time I've seen it, it just pulls me more to keep going. I love this kind of movies. It keeps floating into your head after you've finished watching it.

To talk briefly on the movie’s story, aliens invade Earth, trying to destroy mankind. Their machines were buried beneath earth before we got into existing. Our hero Ray (Tom Cruise), the dad, faces true dangerous situations, trying to keep his daughter and son safe. Will he manage to protect them from aliens? Even with the machines that have invisible shells that can evade rocket launchers? I will let you find the answer when you watch the movie.

In my opinion, this movie fits well for those who loved War World Z. If you have seen this movie, you will easily demonstrate the thrill found in War of the Worlds.

Not to forget to mention the emotions and the feeling you gonna have trying to keep up with the movie. As I watched lots of movies of Tom Cruise, I could possibly say it’s the second most brilliant performance after his performance in The Last Samurai.

However, with all the entertainment and amusement I received from watching this movie. I find a little mistake took place in the movie from the beginning, casting Justin Chatwin to play the role of the son wasn’t really a good idea.

In this particular movie, the son faces tragic, frustrated situations that his facial expression should have shown the emotions he went through, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen. His performance weren’t good enough for War Of The worlds. And also to find out more about his acting career, go Google his name, and see why I said it was a mistake. Still, the movie is amazing.

One more thing to clarify here, if you were one of those people who don’t enjoy sci-fi and love actors like Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Lee etc., then don't watch this movie. You won't find fighting scenes like the way can find in those actors typical movie.

Movie Review: Gone Girl

What to say about this movie other than its so freaking sick awesome!! Even though it was a bit long, but its one of those movies that you either love it or hate it. I LOVED it! It was so much more alive than the book (which I read, check KemzBooks Instagram for the review)

The movie is based on one of the biggest best sellers novels, Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. It’s the story of Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) whose wife, Amy Elliot Dunne (Rosamund Pike) goes missing in their fifth anniversary day. As the cops investigate him and the media grill him, he becomes the main suspect for his wife’s disappearance.

The story is so much better in a movie! Even though the book was good and clear, but something was missing. I guess it’s seeing their eyes and face expressions made all the difference! The script was amazing! Smart, witty, sad, scary and funny ! It was still written by Gillian, which gave the movie the depth that the book had. The whole movie was just like the book! Exactly the same! I was wondering how they would film it, but they did an amazing job! Not a surprise here as the director is David Fincher who directed the amazing Fight Club, The Social Network and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Another thing that made me crazy about this movie is the casting! Finally!! A great cast that portrayed each character in the book perfectly! I was so shocked! I mean EVERYONE were exactly how I imagined them! Nick’s twin Go (Carrie Coon), detective Bony (Kim Dickens), Amy’s parents (David Clennon and Lisa Banes), Desi (Neil Patrick Harris), even the young policeman (Lee Norris) who keeps popping up now and then and OMG Ellen Abbott (Missi Pyle)! EVERY FREAKING ONE!!! Excuse my nerdy excitement hahaha!

Ben Affleck was brilliant! It was like the role was written for him! You choose anyone else and the movie will flop! For me Ben is a good actor, but I don’t run to the cinema to watch his movies, but he killed it in this movie! (No pun intended :p)

The one who truly shined and without her the movie won’t be a success was Rosamund and her portray of Amy! Oh, my god! Her voice just gave me goose bumps! Again, shocked!!

The whole movie is just chilling. Slow, but chilling, like being encased by blinding dark fog. It’s so good!

The version I watched in the cinema wasn’t censored! Just a tiny scene in the end, but that’s fine. Don’t take me wrong, yes the movie is full with curses and language that is not appropriate for kids, but this is not a kids’ movie. We need to see all of that to understand the relationship between Nick and Amy! So I was so happy it wasn’t censored! It would ruin the whole story!

So this movie is for people who love a good mystery and for sure for the book fans! Just beware that it is a bit long and slow, but the story is so freaking good! It’s worth it! Go watch it!

Movie Review: The Best of Me

I haven’t seen any good Romance movie like this one in forever!!! I cried so much!! It’s so good and so sweet and so so beautiful!

It’s the story of Amanda (Michelle Monaghan) and Dawson (James Marsden) who are reunited after 21 years when their good friend Tuck (Gerald McRaney) died. As they prepare to say goodbye we learn their story and how they fell in love and got separated. The flashbacks of young Amanda (Liana Liberato) and young Dawson (Luke Bracey) are so heartwarming and just makes you smile!

It’s one of those movies who leave you with this feeling that life is good and everything is going to be alright even if it doesn’t seem that way right now. It just makes you remember how love matters in life and you should never let it go.

It made me mooshy as you can sense! I’m so high with good feeling or maybe its just my after crying feeling. God, I cried every 10 minutes! The movie is just so romantic and goooood!

The setting is amazing! I loved the town the story was set it. Breathtaking! Such a perfect place for a love story! I also seriously loved the characters in this movie! Both Amanda and Dawson are easy to love and you just want the best for them! They’re not too clichéd, they’re just your normal average good people and I love that!

The cast did a great job to convey this! I felt the love in their eyes, their smile and their words! I enjoyed the younger actors better. Though James Marsden is as gorgeous as ever! He was so brilliant! His eyes, it’s all in his eyes!! Ah!

The movie is based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks, who wrote The Notebook, A Walk to Remember and Dear John. I just want to know how is it possible that I never ever read his books!! I need to fix that!! All the movies I saw based on his books are just … Romantic!

I’m so gonna watch this movie again! I’m still hooked on the soundtrack!

Movie Review: The Equalizer

I saw the trailer of this movie ages ago and I really wanted to watch it and so, I did! I very much enjoyed it! I love Denzel Washington and his movies are always good.

The story of Robert McCall (Denzel) who works in a store and lives a routine quite life as he goes from work to home then to a dinner in the middle of the night when he can’t sleep. There he reads a book quietly and chat to a girl, Terry (Chloë Grace Moretz) who work as a prostitute for a Russian gang. When Terry gets hurt by the gang, Robert calls on his past forgotten skills to help her out.

From the beginning the movie has its own rhythm, one that moves with Roberts mind. We feel what he feels and see what he sees. The way he struggles between his past and present and the details of his thoughts are all reflected in the way the movie was shot. I was so hooked and mesmerized. 

The movie not what you’d expect as its not a typical fast action packed movie, no, it’s more of a Drama thriller. It focuses on the psychological aspect of Roberts personality rather than big action scenes.

Denzel was as amazing as always. I love how he acts! He was so composed in the movie and mysterious, but yet you can read his emotions that flash on his face. It was just what the character needed. And Chloë! I love her. She is so beautiful and so good in her performance. I have high hopes for her, so let’s see where she takes it from here.

So, this is what I think. I did liked and enjoy it, but be aware that the movie is a bit slow. It should be shorter, but for me, I appreciate the details and the development of the character in a movie, so I felt it was good that we got to know Robert more.

The only thing that was funny was when Robert is about to hit someone he calculate the movement and time like Sherlock in the Sherlock Holmes movies. I thought that was a repetition, but its still cool.
