Movie Review: The Purge

Ok, I’m not a horror fan and this is something I keep on saying in the blog, so when The Purge was released in cinemas I said, nope, not gonna watch it. Then one day I was suppose to go write in my room when I passed by the TV and the Purge was just starting. I was like, hmm, it’s still the afternoon, you can watch this. Because I am interested in the story, but I was too scared. So, I watched it and it’s not scary and its actually entertaining and fun thrilling.

The story is that one day a year for 12 hours, all emergency services shut down (police, hospitals, etc.) and you can either hide in your home all secured or go and kill whoever you want to release the anger in you. One night that allows you to do anything you want and become as dangerous as you want to be. So, the idea is people will release all their anger and bad habits that night and live by the laws peacefully throughout the rest of the year. So in this movie we follow one household who thought it was going to be a quite secure night when things just went super crazy.

The movie was fun and I liked the idea of it. The psychological aspect of releasing all that evil you’ve been piling up all year. There is no artistic point of it and it’s not a great one of a kind horror movie. No, it’s just pure entertainment!

Ethan Hawke was pretty good in it. I really enjoyed his performance. And the rest of the cast was good as well.  I’m starting to really enjoy Lena Headey who plays Cersei in Game of Thrones.  She’s pretty awesome.

There’s not a lot of things to say about this movie, but it’s good. It’s perfect for friends’ movie night. It’s exciting. It’s not long. Just good entertainment.

Sadly I saw this movie after the second movie, The Purge Anarchy was already released and removed from the cinemas so I missed it, but I’m watching it soon. It has better rating than the first one, so let’s see!

Movie Review: The Orphanage

I’m going to be honest with you: reviewing this film is one of the most difficult things I am ever going to have to do. In life, there are only a handful of constants that never fail me – three of those make up The Orphanage. They are: Spanish language, Gothic Cinema and Guillermo del Toro.

There’s very little that I can say about The Orphanage that hasn’t already been said. Seven years after its original release date (2007), it remains one of the most poignant ghost stories to have ever been told on the big screen. In a world that relies on bite-sized information and 6 second videos for entertainment, director Juan Antonio Bayona managed to create and sustain a deeper and infinitely more magical study of the world of ghosts and children – something most directors still struggle to achieve. If you’re looking for cheap horror scares, this film is definitely not for you.

The story revolves around Laura, played by the magnetic Belen Rueda and her return to her childhood home, a former orphanage, in order to restore it to its intended function. The ocean-side setting is both idyllic and eerie, with alternating shades of sunshine and grey, nostalgic skies. Her child, Simon – a masterful nine year-old Roger Princep – is also adopted, and soon begins to engage with an ‘imaginary friend’. At first, Laura doesn’t let this concern her – until Simon draws a picture of said friend that Laura identifies with.

Throughout the film, Laura’s mixed emotions of comfort and good memories of her time at the house, versus a more sinister vibe of loss and tragedy, are conveyed through masterful storytelling penned by Sergio Sanchez.Is everything as it seems at the soon to be reopened home? And who is the boy with the sack over his head?

Something that has always plagued me about ghost films is the way these entities are often represented. We are taught to fear the concept of a restless spirit. Words like ‘revenge’ and terms like ‘unfinished business’ are often synonymous with ghost stories and even as a child, reading urban legends about haunted hotels and mysterious deaths chilled me to the core. It was very clear that the acceptable representation of a ghost was that of a terrible and wicked being.

Without giving away too much else, The Orphanage is one of very few films that challenge that pretext. There is such a fine line between Laura’s fantasy and reality, that as a viewer, you are unsure of this until the final scene.   

I wouldn’t recommend The Orphanage to the faint-hearted. It is truly one of the most profound pieces of modern gothic cinema that I have ever experienced. The adrenaline is in no short supply, but the emotion it packs is above and beyond any expectations.

Movie Review: World War Z

To be honest I thought this film will flop! I didn’t believe in it and as always I LOVE it when I’m SURPRISED!!! Brad Pitt really pulled it off! It really is a summer movie not to be missed!

The film is about a deadly zombie epidemic spreading across the globe and Gerry (Brad Pitt) an ex UN employee is called to help in finding the source of the virus and hopefully the antidote with it. It’s the same old zombie story, but I liked how this film elevated the quality and the professionalism of a ‘zombie’ film.  It was more real and about the virus more than the guns and violent.

I went to this movie picking on everything, ‘cause I really thought it will be horrible, but the more I watch, the more I get into the story. It’s not a horror freaking scary film, but it’s a true suspense and will leave you on the edge of your seat.  The flashing scenes and the running and screaming put you right in the middle of the story. At the beginning I was confused, but then it gets clearer and you get used to the style of filming.

Brad as well was surprising (Although he needed a haircut, but some may disagree with me on that) He was so into his rule and really believable. Also I really enjoyed the acting of Mireille Enos who played, Karin (Gerry’s wife). Their relationship on the screen was so inspiring and moving.

The sound mixing and the soundtrack were amazing and really added to the suspense. There were moments of complete silent which was for me way more frightening! It was brilliant!!

As a friend told me the film is based on a book that tells you how to survive the zombie apocalypse, so to all Zombie fans and those who are getting ready to the zombie apocalypse (Like Me!) watch this film! It has a lot of great survival tips! I loved it!!

Go see it!!

I’m gonna revise my Zombie plan so, till the next film!

Movie Review: Cowboys & Aliens

So, you read this title and you say hmmmm interesting! This gonna be fun!! And add Steven Spielberg as the producer hmmm Awesome??

No!! Do not be fooled by the coolness and awesomness of this concept!! The movie is so lame I was about to leave the theater!! And believe me, I see everything so it means, the movie is LAME!!!

The movie was slow and predictive and super boring!! I mean come on!!! The idea is amazing! I mean who thought that cowboys fought Aliens!! Why do you have to ruin it!! I myself doubted the film but thought, have some faith girl! It could be great!! But I should’ve listened to the sound in my head!! The critic voice and go to another movie!!

I really didn’t like a lot of things in the movie, even though it had some good prospect!! *sigh*

What I hated the most was Abigail Spencer :/ OMG!! The lameness of her acting!! I was happy she died!! Don’t worry, I think it’s better that I spoil it for you than you go and actually see it!! Ah!! Also the awesome <3 Daniel Craig wasn’t that good as well *weep*. He looked sad old, not sexy old like George Clooney!!

Anyhowz it was boring and lame and I’m disappointed! And I say to you, dear reader, don’t waste your time by seeing it!!

Oh!! One question before I leave you! Why do Aliens always look ugly and monstrous? (especially in Spielberg films!!) I mean if they had super intelligence shouldn’t they have super cuteness??

Movie Review: Final Destination 5

This is one of my favorite horror movies. I'm not a horror kind of girl, but I like this series! I like it because even though we know that all of them are gonna die, we still feel the thrill and anticipation of each death! I mean I kept squealing whenever one of them is about to die and still it happen in a way I could never expected!!!

It was so thrilling!! In the end there were couple of plot twists that I really enjoyed and never saw in the previous movies! The death scenes were so scary! I mean they die because of simple everyday gadgets that we never think they can harm us! It's super freaky :p makes you feel paranoid for a while hehehehe!

The movie was short, only 90 minutes or so, but very enjoyable!! Some deaths were seriously grouse!! I saw the movie in IMAX 3D! It was AWESOME!!!! I have a headache now, but it's so worth it hehehehe! Never watch 3D unless it was in an IMAX!!

This kind of movies you have to watch in theater, because without the big screen and the sound system it just lose its edginess!! I hope there's a 6^th part!

And remember *spooky voice* You Can't Cheat Death!!!
