Movie Review: Hercules

Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) playing Hercules is something I was doubting. I was expecting too much muscle and bad special effects and very weird legends. But and it’s a big BUT, the movie is really GOOD!!

The normal story of Hercules, but this time it’s a bit different. There is no magic or creatures. There is only Hercules who is strong and his comrades who helped build his legend to scare their enemies. Then Lord Cotys (John Hurt) called for his help to defeat his opponent.

The movie is super fun! And the special effects were really good! You can tell they spent some money on it! There are a lot of funny scenes. I love witty warriors remarks.

What I enjoyed the most was Hercules’s nephew Iolaus (Reece Ritchie) who was the storyteller of the group and who exaggerated all of Hercules’s stories to build his legend. It was like ancient PR and marketing hahahaha. It was very interesting to watch. I would love to be a PR person at that time. Everything then is so new hehehehe now it’s a bit more complicated. (I work in PR btw :p)

Hercules’s team were awesome too! My favorite were the seer Amphiaraus (Ian McShane) and Autolycus (Rufus Sewell). At first Dwayne’s appearance was a bit odd, but then he really played it well.

The only bad thing was the Qatar Cinema censoring! They cut here and there, it was annoying, but for a movie that talks about Gods and demigods, it wasn’t that bad! However, annoying as always!

It’s a really fun movie and I recommend it. We’re moving into the boring season, before the good movies come in November!

Movie Review: Guardians of the Galaxy

This movie is just FUNNY, EXCITING and AMAZING!! I LOVE it! It’s one of those movies that I will watch over and over and over again!!

Based on a comic series (which I haven’t read to be honest) comes the story of the funniest group of Galaxy mischiefs. You have the human, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), the weirdest and funniest bounty hunters, Rocket (voice of Bradley Cooper) and Groot (voice of Vin Diesel), the angry vindictive Drax (Dave Bautista) and the most hated female in the Galaxy, Gamora (Zoe Saldana).  They all are pushed together by the hate of Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) and the need for money hahaha.

I enjoyed the movie so much!! As you expect from a Marvel’s movie, it’s light and fun. Super fun! The coolest thing is that Peter was abducted from Earth when he was 8 living in the 80s and with him he took his cassette and Walkman with songs from the 80s. So the movie had this rocking retro feel that made me into 80s songs!!

Other than that, the world of this story was so alive and done really well! The makeup the wardrobe weren’t over done for me. The world is so colorful, so many things could have gone wrong, but it didn’t!!

Maybe because it had this 80s feel and even the ships and weapons were done in a classical space style, I felt that it was done in that era, but with today’s equipment. It was freaking awesome!!

The cast of this movie was amazing too! The chemistry between the characters was just right! And everyone shined! I love it! I wanna go live there and be with them!!!

I RECOMMEND this for sure! I’m not that big on Space movies, but this one just STOLE MY HEART!!!

Movie Review: Back to the Future

Like Jurassic Park, I haven’t watched Back to the Future growing up! Even though I heard about it and wanted to watch it, I never got the chance. So, I rented the HD version from iTunes like with Jurassic Park and its so much better all renovated in an HD version!

So the movie is super fun! It’s the story of the young Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) who always assisted the crazy scientist Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd). One day when he went to meet Dr. Emmett, he found him with a car that worked as a TIME MACHIN! And in the first try something goes wrong and Marty is stuck back in time in 1955 where he has to get his parents together or he won’t exist anymore!

The movie is so awesome!! I always enjoy time traveling! It’s very interesting to see the ripple effect you leave when you mess with one little detail of the past! And it’s so fun having a crazy scientist! We haven’t had one of those in a while! Not one that turned into a super hero.

The script is a bit funny and the special effects are of course dated (though it won an Oscar for it back in 1986), but that’s fine. You can still watch the movie and get excited and happy! It really got me into an 80s mood!

This movie is not only a classic, it’s one of the landmark of sci-fi movies! The car alone became an icon! And it also took me back in time where the story and the plot was the focus of the movie, not the special effects. These days everyone want to make bigger, louder movies while people look for the original stories. I think probably that's why people are going to the Hunger Games type of movies, because it's a bit new. I love how simple the story of this movie! I mean just a time traveling machine experience went wrong. It's still fun and entertaining. Like Jurassic Park, it's just a park with Dinosaurs in them, but it's stick in your mind and make you a fan without even realizing it. It's like the same thing with the 90s romance movies and what I said in While You Were Sleeping review.
The special effects these days are mind blowing! If those guys in the 70s and 80s got them, they'll go crazy, so it'll be fun to see something simple and original with a little bit of Special Effects fairy dust ;)

This is a MUST SEE CLASSIC! Highly recommended!

Movie Review: Matilda

The movie review I am bringing to you today is that of Matilda (Mara Wilson). A fantasy movie from the year 1996 and a perfect watch for the family at home on a weekend. It's hilarious, enjoyable, and also has its own share of exaggerations but I am sure you will enjoy it.

Based on Roald Dahl's popular book, this fantasy explores themes of youthful independence and personal identity. Personally, I have always been a fan of Roald Dahl stories and this is just another one.

The fun comes through the exaggerated situations and roles in the movie. Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman (Matilda’s father and mother) portray the ultimate self-centered, dysfunctional, TV-addicted adult living. They don’t let Matilda go to school because they think she is four. She is really 6 1/2. When stuck for a real answer to her valid arguments, daddy DeVito’s best response is “because I’m big and you’re small. I’m smart and you’re dumb. I’m right and you’re wrong.”

She does get to school eventually, but it’s more of the same. The principal is a big, strong, surly woman who throws boys out of windows and swings a sweet young girl over a fence by her pigtails. It is cartoon-style violence; no one is ever really hurt. In the midst of her troubles, Matilda develops a “miraculous” power.

There are few people who don't sometimes feel unappreciated, misused, and misunderstood. Those are the feelings that Matilda recognizes and confronts. Young Matilda has a hard time with a family who don't seem to understand how special she is. Yet she never lets this get her down for long, always making the best of whatever situation she's in.

Matilda is a good film for all ages to enjoy. The story includes a lot of cartoonish violence, nearly all of it perpetrated by a bullying school principal. Children who displease the evil principal are put in "the chokey," a dark closet lined with nails and broken glass. When Matilda's parents aren't neglecting her, they're berating her ... so she decides to punish them. But she also stands up for the principal's victims.  The violence depicted in the story is very unrealistic and truly exaggerated. Hence, there is no harm in children watching it at all.

It’s a good movie for all the ages.

Movie Review: Bad Words

Directed and stared by Jason Bateman, the movie talks about a 40 years old man, Guy Trilby (Bateman), who managed to enter a spelling bee (which is a spelling competition for young students) after finding loopholes in their guidelines.

The story is as simple as that and it only last for an hour and a half and it was funny. Very cynical though and a bit rude, but the whole movie reflects Guy’s angry and resentful character. As we move into the story we’ll understand why Guy became the way he is and it’s interesting.

Normally I don’t like cynical lines, but this movie made me laugh. It was dark and not dark in the same time. Very enjoyable, but if you don’t like these kinda twisty movies, this is not a movie for you.

You know, I’m starting to enjoy watching comedy movies that are directed by comedy actors. This movie and for example as well, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty were made in a very good way and with an artistic touch, not just a cheap comedy. There’s a solid message behind them too. Though for me I think Ben Steller’s Secret Life of Walter Mitty is way way much better. But Bad Words is a good first attempt from Bateman to direct a movie.

I like Bateman’s acting as well. Having Kathryn Hahn in the movie as well was entertaining. She was playing the journalist who is trying to find out why did Guy enter the competition?

Just a word of caution, this is  NOT a movie for kids or family. Don’t be fooled by the spelling bee theme :p.
