Movie Review: The World’s End

From my DVD pile I found this movie! And it was unexpectedly funny! It’s the story of Gary King (Simon Pegg) who seriously did nothing after high school and who always lived in past glories as a teenager. One day he decides to reunite with his schoolmates and relive one of their best adventures, which was drinking from 12 bars in the same night.  His friends who are all moved on and living their lives with wives and kids are reluctant to join him, but they do in the end. The movie is not about drinking, it’s actually about the World is actually ending with aliens suddenly attacking them in the first bar!

I was so shocked hahhaa, but in a good way. If you haven’t watched the trailer like me, you won’t guess it from the first fifteen minute, but that’s made it even better for me. It felt just meh at the beginning, but keep on watching, it gets so much better. It was really a well-crafted Comedy and worth the watch. I cracked up a lot and the end was awesome too!

The idea of the aliens is fun and not too much. There's a lot of action! The cast is great and the script is funny. I’m getting to become a huge fan of British movies. I’m so happy I found this in my pile!

Movie Review: 22 Jump Street

In Instagram I announced that I’m not buying or renting any new movies or even old ones that I haven’t seen until I watch ALL the DVDs I bought and forgot about! This also include the movies I piled up in my iTunes hehehe so today I’m starting my #KemzDVDpile with this funny movie!

The movie picks up with the 21 Jump Street police squad who manly send young looking cops to be under cover students (see 21 Jump Street Review) and the main partners are Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) who this time go to collage and try and bust drug dealers.

I love this new series. I laughed from the first scene! Yes, it’s not as good as the first, but you should never expect that. That’s the secret of enjoying a movie; go with low expectations hehee. But it’s still so much better than other comedy sequels. There are a lot of funny references in the dialogue about so many things, including the actors lives outside the movie and how sequels are bad sometimes and you should wait till the end credits! It was a funny thing they did hehehe.

I’m so so in LOVE with Channing Tatum these days, it’s hilarious and in this movie Jonah and he have a great chemistry together and they work the comedy bromance really well. You believe that they are best friends and you want them to keep being friends and not fight!

Yes, this is not 21 Jump Street, but it’s still good and it’s still made me laugh so I for sure recommend it!

Till the next movie I piled up in my list!

Halloween Movie Review: Edward Scissorhands

So, Halloween is this Friday and I thought why not review movies specially for it! I don’t watch scary movie, but there are still Halloween themed movies I can watch! I mean I love all dark, light and mythical creatures! So this is my time hahaha and I started with the dark comedy drama Edward Scissorhands.

Directed by my favorite genius, Tim Burton and brilliant actor, Johnny Depp, the movie is the story of Edward, a machine turned into a man who is left all alone and incomplete with scissor for hands when his inventor died before he could finish the job. He is left all alone living in a dark mansion until one day Peg (Dianne Wiest), a makeup saleswoman enter the mansion, see Edward, feel sorry for him and invite him to come live with her family. The neighborhood housewives are all intrigued by this new comer and Edward shows great talent and he becomes famous, but will his 15 minutes of fame last?

This is the first time I watch this movie and I’m happy I finally did! From the start with the main title song the movie took me by surprise and threw me right into the Halloween mood! It put me in a 90s spirit and its so charming. It made me feel sad yet hopeful. Loved it! You can listen to it here.

The movie did deliver on the comedy! The bored housewives are hilarious. I loved their scenes and the way they looked and talked and even how their houses are lined and organized. Tim really brought their stereotype to life.

The movie is from the 90s obviously and it’s clear that it didn’t have big budget for special effect, but that’s actually good! Because the weak and funny special effects, mainly on the dark mansion, added to the charm of the movie. It was like a fairytale.

The scene when Kim (Winona Ryder) who Edward love, dancing under the snow is so magical! It’s really is a sweet story that will make your heart melt for sure! And its not as dark as you’d think it is. The only “dark” aspect is how the mansion is rusty and burned out and the fact that Edward had scissor hands. The movie is worth the watch! It was nominated to an Oscar and a Golden Globe, so you know I’m right ;).

Ah, such an enchanting story! It’s the perfect movie to put me in the right mood! For more info on it and the trailer, please click here.

Movie Review: Airplane!

Ok, so as I continue to watch classic 80s movies, I read in Twitter that this movie is one of the funniest comedies ever, so I had to watch it and it really made me laugh!

The movie is so silly, you have to laugh and I do believe they did that on purpose hahaha. It’s the story an airplane that will be in danger cause everyone who ate the fish dish got food poisoning including the pilot and co-pilot.

It’s so silly, like I said and exaggerate everything and it’s all been done in a funny way! I didn’t cry from laughter, but I was giggling and laughing through the whole movie. It’s so stupid, it’s good!

You have different kind of passengers coming in with different kind of personalities, so there is a lot going on and a lot of room to makes us laugh.

There is a lot of stereotyping in the movie, which I will forgive, cause it was the 80s and Hollywood didn’t know better. However I noticed that there was a scene deleted in the version I watched (rented from iTunes). The scene I remember seeing in a documentary, Real Bad Arabs about a comment how London is full with Arabs. They probably took it off after the documentary, which is to be noted.
I watched the movie as a fun comedy, so I didn’t go too deep into analyzing it that way.

It’s still fun and really cheered me up! So this is also a must watched 80s movie! Before you watch it, do remember that it was in 1980 and you got to be one of those who gets American humor. Sometimes a movie that makes me laugh, won't make my friend laugh and vise verse.

Movie Review: Life of Crime

As I was planning my weekend review, I discovered that Life of Crime is released in Cinemas in Qatar, but it’s an old movie from 2013. Nonetheless, I rented it in iTunes to tell you whether to watch in in Cinemas or not. Let me tell you, it’s not worth the movie cinema experience. Don’t waste your money and only watch it by renting it or when it’s on TV.

The movie is the story of two guys, Ordell and Louis (Mos Def and John Hawkes) who kidnapped Mickey Dawson (Jennifer Aniston) in the 70s. Things don’t go as planned and they have to deal with it.

I don’t know why they categorized this movie as “comedy”, because it wasn’t funny. It felt more of a drama movie to me. I only laughed a tiny bit in the ending. The movie however was appealing. I don’t know what it was, but I kept watching and it put me in a daze, in a good way. Maybe it was the 70s theme, the beautiful outfits and music.

Daniel Schechter, the director, did a good job with it. The plot however was meh and again not funny, so it could be better.

Again this is not a movie to go to the movies for. Even if you don’t see it ever, it won’t be a loss.

Well, this is all I can say about this movie. For more info and the trailer, click here.

I hope The Maze Runner is released next week!!

Till then!
