Movie Review: Barfi!

This movie is so much fun! I remember when I first watched it, I was in a bad mood which was changed tremendously by the movie! Actually I don’t know how shall I tell you the story, because even while you watch, you will keep on asking what is going on, and that is what is amazing about this movie!

The story is of Barfi (Ranbir Kapoor) the mute and deaf man who was born as Murphy, and his name got changed to Barfi over the years! Barfi meets Shruti (Ileana) at the railway station, and they fall in love, but Shruti is engaged to another man. Later on, Barfi’s Father fall sick, and needs an urgent operation. Barfi tries to collect money, and an idea comes to him: to kidnap Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra), the autistic girl of the household his father works for as chauffeur! And there starts another story, when Barfi plans to kidnap Jhilmil, he finds that she is kidnapped already! Barfi finds Jhilmil by accident and goes on with his plan, but it is too late, and the story just starts here!

The movie takes us in and out within the years in three different timings. It is set in the beautiful cities of Darjeeling and Calcutta. Everything is simple yet full of details. I loved how Barfi and Jhilmil played their roles perfectly, that was the fun side of the movie. Barfi is deaf and mute, yet so charming, intelligent and full of tricks. Then comes Shruti the dramatic part, and the police officer, which is the hilarious part of the movie; it would probably remind you of Tom & Jerry and Detective Conan!

You have to pay attention to each and every scene; each detail symbolizes a meaning, and all characters are interconnected with each other. When I watch some movies, it seems that there are some scenes that are okay to miss, but in this movie, there is a new story and an important detail in each and every minute! You will never get bored as you watch! Rather, it is such a mood booster movie with all the interconnected details and enthusiasm, the colorful landscapes of Darjeeling and Calcutta, and all the fun songs, especially that hilarious song of “grgr, brbr, krkr”!

Barfi is a romantic comedy, directed by Anurag Basu, and has won 27 awards.

This is the kind of movie that I would definitely watch over and over again!

Movie Review: Guzaarish

Guzaarish is another movie that takes me time to think on how I can review it in a way that would deliver its real beauty. This movie is all about beauty, if I tell you it is Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai then you know what I mean!

The story is of the great magician Ethan Mascarenhas (Roshan), who requests to be dignified by getting euthanasia (the mercy killing) with the help of his best friend, the lawyer Devyani Dutta (Shernaz Patel), after being a quadriplegic for 14 year. When the court denies his case, Ethan proposes his appeal for people to vote through his radio show, Radio Zindaghi, which is run from his home, and directed by his nurse Sofia D'Souza (Aishwarya). Being a model for millions of people, Ethan is faced with harsh responses, but he, who has been a conquer of millions lives, is in despair with his own. Out of nowhere, a young man called Omar Siddiqui (Aditya Roy Kapoor) appears, and fights to learn magic from Ethan, and reveals to us the shocking tragedy of Ethan’s quadriplegia. Sofia who has nursed Ethan for 12 years, and whose life is defined by the daily rituals of serving her master, stands against his request, but eventually tries to satisfy his desire, in a different way.

Guzaarish (request) is a great drama romance movie, and, literally, a work of art. We are constantly shifted in and out between Ethan’s glory days, and despair current ones. Ethan’s magic tricks and performances are spectacular; you would be mesmerized as you watch the gracefulness and beauty. Sofia is like a piece of art along with the chapel-like mansion; an art of old ages. Her gypsy style, her beautiful earrings, and the only dance she did in the movie is so charming. The mansion, each and every detail on the walls, and the furniture and the garden, and the great landscapes of Goa, are all jewel-like portraits. The cinematography (Sudeep Chatterjee) is literally captivating; you would be indulged and enchanted as you watch.

The idea of mercy killing is denied by all means to everyone, but if we consider it from Ethan’s perspective, what is such stage a person might reach to appeal for and face death so eagerly!  Looking at Ethan being a model for so many people, who wants him alive for them, but what about him, what about his own life; a life where he can’t fulfill or satisfy his basic needs or desires, nor even scratch his nose! In such a case, could he be granted euthanasia, what is left for him from life?

When I first watched this movie, I directly grabbed my notebook and started jotting down quotes. Ethan’s radio show is so inspiring, the way he presents it, his sense of humor, and his presence in the moment … this is the kind of truthful absolutely beautiful movie which calls out to enjoy life, live every moment, “laugh loudly, forgive quickly and love deeply”.

Guzaarish is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Black movie) and has won 3 awards in India.
