Movie Review: The Amazing Spider-Man

So the sequel is coming out tomorrow, Thursday 1st of May! And to watch it, I have to actually watch the first one :p. To be honest I wasn’t that excited to do so, because the fact is, it’s a remake of a movie that was made only 10 years prior to this movie. The story is so fresh in our head! The last Spiderman movie was in 2007! Instead of watching a new story, we go back again to Peter Parker in High School! Again!

I think it’s all because Tobey Maguire, he doesn’t want to do another movie, so they need to find someone new, Andrew Garfield and reintroduce him to us.  As a superhero superfan I obviously watched all the previous movies, so I can easily compare. I liked Andrew more than Tobey, even though some will argue, but for some reason Tobey is emotionless, something cold in him. So maybe it’s a personal taste thing.

The story is the same, Peter get bitten (Again) he makes a custom (Again) he fights scientists turned bad (Again). As you can tell I was bored watching this movie. The story is a bit more refined, but there’s nothing new! The soundtrack is nice though; I liked the tunes. The new special effects are so much better for sure, even though it’s only been 10 years, the special effects have evolved completely.

Emma Stone was good too. I just love her, she’s amazing. I think she needs to do more movies. I don't see her that much these days. She's brilliant! 

That’s about it! I hope 2 is going to be good!  They better do something new, because there is no excuse! It’s the same director, which is positive, I liked Marc Webb take on the story and part 3 is announced for 2014, so better be big on the box office or some people are gonna be yelled at! HAHA!

Movie Review: Brides (Nyfes)

Ok… this is a hard movie to write about, because when you watch, it just possesses you! I’m trying to think of the proper words to deliver the movie’s real beauty, because I’m afraid I don’t value it enough! Yes, it is that much amazing!

First of all, the soundtrack (StamatisSpanoudakis) needs a review by itself! Listening to it, it just haunts you; it is nostalgic and melancholic, the two concepts the movie addresses. I still haven’t told you what the story of the movie, but do bear with me, I have so much to say.

The story is about the mail-order brides in 1922 sent from Greece, Turkey and Russia to America, to the men living there. The ordered brides get to know their husbands-to-be from a picture through an agency, and the men learn about the brides-to-be from birth certificates. Niki Douka (Victoria Haralabidou) a “substitute” mail-order bride, who is sent from Greece to a tailor in Chicago, meets the American photographer Norman Harris (Damian Lewis), who is returning home after giving up on his career. During their journey over the sea, Niki, falls in love with Norman and is in despair to choose whether to go with her lover or to save her family’s honor… and what a despair, unbelievable!

This is a very deep movie, it would probably remind you of Titanic, but I may say it is deeper. The nostalgic melancholic soundtrack has gone deep inside my soul, and I was touched by Niki’s simplicity and frankness. I have read once that one can be seduced by conversations. Such was the case.

The agony of making a decision, or let me say, seeing the future and not being able to change it. Again the same question; what is the correct decision? Shall one think only of one’s interests or should sacrifice for the sake of the family’s honor? But really what is the right decision?.. Is it always and forever “Shut your heart, listen to your mind” and to convince oneself that memories are enough to live by? Or is it really better to live with memories?! “You are the being I will miss forever”, writes Norman in the only letter Niki ever gets, this sentence just possessed me!

I was so shocked to learn that there were really mail-order brides in history, but what is one to say; poverty, family honor! I loved so much the set of the movie, the places, and the deck, the sewing machine, the letters and photographs, and lots of what Norman call “minor things”, which shows its value in a way or other, and again the soundtrack, and much more.

If you like deep movies, if you appreciate words and gestures, and Titanic, then this is just for you! Brides (Nyfes) is a drama romance directed by Pantelis Voulgaris.

This is an unforgettable movie!

Movie Review: Snowpiercer

Chris Evans returns, after portraying Captain America, in this future thrilling sci-fi movie, as Curtis, a revolution leader in the last human home, the Snowpiercer. After human mess up as always, the earth is covered with a thick coat of snow. Everything is frozen and everyone is dead, everyone except the people riding on the Wilford state of the art train, the Snowpiercer. The train is divided into people in the front and their first class, the second class, the economy and the people in the free zone, the back of the train. After 17 years of living in complete poverty and surviving only on protein bars, the people are led by Curtis to revolt against Wilford and the people in the front.

It is so thrilling and keeps you on the edge of your seat! It’s just one hell of a train ride! Each scene takes us from one surprise to the next. You feel the characters and you cheer for them, hoping they will make it and find their freedom!

The movie is directed by the South Korean director, Joon-ho Bong. I haven’t seen any of his previous movies, but I loved his artistic touch in this movie. You can tell that even though the movie is Hollywood themed, but you can see the eastern Asia cinema in it.  It was a well-planned infusion. A lot of scenes and lines from the movie stuck in my head, but if I will choose one it will be the Axe fight scene, which was just amazing. The melody of the movement reflected the pain and suffering of people living in the back.

From the beginning you can understand the message behind the scenes with what will happen if we meddled with the environment so much that we end up ruining it and also the subject of the rich using the poor and the inequality between the groups of people. The movie is symbolic and it was done in a very brilliant way!

The cast of the movie include Oscar winners Tilda Swinton and Octavia Spencer who both were brilliant. Tilda transformed totally in the movie and she was amazing as always! Octavia, OMG! I love her. I don’t even have to explain why! She’s just awesome! Oh and I was happy to see Jamie Bell who I loved in the movie, Jumper. He was one of my favorite characters in the movie and of course Chris Evans was as brilliant as always! I’m really getting to like his acting. He’s getting really good.

So, the movie is awesome! I highly recommend it. Unless if you can’t take suspense or gruesome bloody scenes, so I advice against it.

Movie Review: Midnight in Paris

Many of us wish or know someone who wishes they were born in a different era! “I wish I lived in Paris in 1920's!” that was my thought when I watched this movie. Midnight in Paris is written & directed by my favorite filmmaker, WoodyAllen. Woody, is an actor, director, screenwriter, comedian, musician and playwright whose career spans more than 50 years. In Midnight in Paris, which is his 41^st film, he has done a marvelous work on this picture that left audiences with a blissful feeling of happiness when watching it.

The film opens with an American couple who are on a holiday in Paris with the girl’s parents who were there for business. Gil (Owen Wilson) and Inez (Rachel McAdams) are engaged and preparing for their marriage. However, Gil has a special love for Paris as a screenwriter from Hollywood who aspires to be a novelist and to live the vagabond life of a writer in an attic in the “Ville de Lumiere” or the city of light, Paris. Inez on the other hand, wants to live in the high standards of life that she was raised in and who loves life in all its current opportunities.

The film takes an unexpected turn when Gil travels back in time while he was walking through the beautiful allies of Paris. Unexpectedly, an old automobile stops and passengers invited him to join them. It all happened at midnight, this is where the title came from. He finds himself in the Golden Era of Paris where he meets his idols; painters, writers and artists who lived in Paris in 1920's. Gil meets with Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. He saw the artists who frequented Stein's famous salon: Picasso, Dali, Man Ray, Cole Porter, Man Ray and Tom Eliot. This encourages him to consult his literary heroes on the novel he is writing and that takes him through many events where he discovers his soul through a love story.

Owen Wilson performance was true and convincing as he portrayed the true feeling of a fan meeting his heroes in an astonishing sincere act. The location itself, which is Paris, is enigmatic and Woody Allen succeed in showcasing the beauty and the romanticism of the city of lights through the film’s cinematography.

The music was the element that tied the knot for all the beautiful components of this film. It takes you subliminally to that era and you feel the warmth and beauty of the places, the characters and their costumes in a way that is far from any cliché you might think of at that time.

Kudos to Woody Allen for the great script that won him an Oscar and a Golden Globes award for Best Original Screenplay. The script was enigmatic and powerful and lets you dive into the film and be part of it. The scene where Hemingway talked to Gil about life and death is just captivating.

Midnight in Paris is a true game changer for contemporary filmmaking and commercial cinema. The genius of Woody Allen just has no limit. I would watch this film many times and each time I would feel the same excitement and nostalgia to the time where art and literature were a way of life.

Movie Review: Jack The Giant Slayer

So, this is another movie I watched when I was sick. I had a bad flue few months ago and I watched so many movies. 

The story of Jack and his magic beans that we all grew up hearing. This movie came with the wave of a new take of fairytales, like the movies, Red Riding Hood and Mirror Mirror. However it didn’t have the same fun modern twist that the rest of the movies had.

The special effects are a bit weak, I personally didn’t like the animated story in the beginning of the movie, but the story picks up by the middle of the movie. The adventure is entertaining.  
I did enjoy the acting and the relationship between the characters. That helped make me like them and cheer for them when the fight with the Giants happened.

It’s not the best film in the world, but it’s still a fun movie to watch, something for the whole family to enjoy.
